The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) is committed to enhancing the availability of high-quality palliative care for patients and their families, as well as promoting the field of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. This is achieved through professional education, workforce development, support for clinical practice standards, research, and advocacy for public policy. With a history spanning nearly 25 years, the Academy has steadily worked towards advancing hospice and palliative medicine and improving the care of patients with serious illnesses. Originally established as the Academy of Hospice Physicians in 1988 with 250 charter members, the Academy has since grown to over 4,400 members.
