CCNV was founded in the 1970s by Father Guinan and a group of George Washington students as a response to questions about justice and human rights during the Vietnam War. The organization initially focused on education and outreach, but soon expanded to providing food, shelter, medical care, and other assistance to the homeless. CCNV has been involved in organizing protests, fasts, and marches to bring attention to the needs of the poor and homeless. Today, they are able to provide up to 2,500 people a day with food, shelter, clothing, medical care, and educational support. Their Arts & Education department offers classes and support to both residents and the wider community.
