English At Large

English At Large is a nonprofit organization that provides individual and small group instruction to adult immigrants and new arrivals who want to acquire English language skills as they adapt to life in the United States. Founded in 1970 by Lexington resident Mildred Gilman, English At Large serves 21 communities and more than 8,000 local adult learners through its two core programs: one-to-one English tutoring and group conversation practice. The organization's volunteers receive training and ongoing support to deliver customized instruction, and its students come from around the world with various goals, including gaining citizenship, finding work, and acclimating to their new communities. English At Large's programs and services are supported by an array of businesses, associations, and individual contributors.
