The Hands On program, developed by Dr. Jennifer Richards and the Department of Food Science and Technology at the University of Tennessee, aims to improve global health through hands-on education in personal hygiene and food handling. The program's mission is to expand its reach to students in 50 states by 2025 and 20 countries by 2050. To achieve this, the program plans to collaborate with others, customize its curriculum, train and support teachers, and ensure the sustainability of the program. Participation in Hands On is free to schools, thanks to a grant from the USDA and a donation from The Grocery Manufacturers Association. The program is based on effective educational theories and has shown a high retention rate for its content.
