Established in 1921 as a sports association, Ogden Fire Company 1 quickly transitioned to fire fighting and was officially chartered in 1923 with thirty members. The late Edmund E. Holden served as the first president and the late George E. Peters as the first fire chief. The original firehouse, located at 2638 Ogden Avenue, was built on land donated by the late Edward Grunwell and served the community for 49 years. The company's first truck was loaned by Viscose Fire Company in Marcus Hook in 1922, with subsequent equipment including a model T Ford chemical mixer and a Federal pumper. The first brand new piece of equipment, a 1955 American LaFrance 750 gallon per minute pumper, was purchased, followed by a Ford high pressure fog spray pumper in 1959. Ambulance service was added in 1964, with the first ambulance being a 1963 International. In 1970, the company purchased a five-acre tract for the present firehouse, which was completed in 1972. Ogden Fire Company 1 continues to grow and recently finished renovations on their building.
