The San Francisco School of Needlework and Design is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the art of hand embroidery. Founded in 2015 by Lucy Barter and Ellice Sperber, the school offers classes for students at all levels, from beginners to professionals. In addition to classes, the school has a library with over 2,000 books on embroidery, fashion, and needlework history, and a shop that sells embroidery supplies. The school also hosts free Stitch-Ins every Wednesday and offers week-long stitch retreats, certificate courses, and a variety of classes. The mission of the school is to promote and share the knowledge and history of hand embroidery and needlework to ensure its future as a valued art form, while inspiring the next generation of artisans.
