The Long Island Museum

The Long Island Museum, located in Stony Brook, offers three exhibition buildings, gardens, outdoor sculpture, a one-room schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop, and other historic buildings. The museum features permanent and changing exhibitions, as well as a collection of horse-drawn vehicles, showcasing Long Island's cultural heritage. The museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate and is dedicated to American history and art with a Long Island connection. The museum's collection includes over 40,000 items dating from the late 1700s to the present, including American artifacts of everyday life, fine art, and works by renowned genre painter William Sidney Mount. LIMarts, a collaborative arts group, offers a membership opportunity for visual artists to exhibit and sell artwork, participate in programming events, and engage with the cultural community. The museum is accredited by the American Association of Museums and operates a gift shop, after-school programs, and publishes various journals and annual reports.
