WSBT-TV, one of the first ultra high frequency television stations in the Midwest, began broadcasting in December 1952. The station has been a pioneer in the region, presenting closed-circuit telecasts of sporting events, transmitting color pictures, establishing news bureaus, and producing morning and noon news programs. As a Columbia Broadcasting affiliate, WSBT-TV serves northern Indiana and southwest Michigan and is owned by Schurz Communications. The station's South Bend location also houses WSBT, an AM radio station that offers news talk and sports talk programming. Schurz Communications is a diversified and privately owned communication company with newspaper, television, and radio properties.
